Comments from director of "Unsung" music video

Kevin Kerslake directed the music video for Helmet's "Unsung," which began airing in the summer of 1992. During that time in the early 90's and increasingly in later years Kevin would become renowned for his style and countless number of music and pop culture film projects.

Being an old Helmet fan myself and a perpetual seeker of technical and behind-the-scenes info about music, film, and general history, I decided to contact Kevin after years of finding nothing about this particular video on the web. After asking him for any general information he wouldn't mind sharing about the video shoot, he responded:

"We shot "Unsung" in the old Stroh's factory in the San Fernando Valley. It was a hell hole of a place that was on its last leg, and is probably a parking lot or a mall by now. No anecdotes to speak of, except an epileptic seizure or two from the strobes. Plus, the Lightning Strikes prototypes we were testing out required a generator per lamp, so when you walked out to the lot where the twenty-four generators were stationed, it was sort of like navigating a gauntlet of Taser guns. I'm sure it did physical damage and even caused some neuronal death, but the sensation was like nothing anyone had ever felt before and helped keep everyone awake through the night.... How's that?"

So an interesting little story there from Kevin. I often wondered what that factory was... such a strong image when paired with Helmet's flagship song.

Cheers

Interesting, thanks. It's my favorite Helmet video.
